PRESS RELEASE
6th September 2000
Local cancer fighters race past £15,000

Luck of the IrishSuddenly the new drive in Wigan, Leigh and district for the £25m 'Christie's' appeal is enjoying the proverbial 'luck of the Irish'.

Although the local fund raising group for the centenary appeal of Manchester's famous cancer centre was only formed this Spring they have already raised over £15,000. But with supporters like Susan Powell and friends that is not so surprising.

Susan is an Irish music enthusiast and part time barmaid at the Dog and Partridge, Pemberton. Aided by landlord Steve Liptrot and staff she staged an Irish evening. They attracted Jackie Ryan, of Liverpool's noted Ryan Brothers, a gaggle of other Irish musicians, a very large crowd and an amazing £610. This Susan (centre) and Steve (right) proudly handed over to Christie's local group chairman Carl Sharpe, as together with staff members Cath Barnet (second left) and Sonia Howarth, they toasted their success in the traditional Irish nectar.

"Thanks to supporters and customers it was certainly a huge success," said Steve "and we are planning another Irish event for Christie's in November".

Local pubs are certainly helping Christie's reach their huge target for funding research, new patient facilities and the development of more effective and 'kinder' cancer treatments. The Mabbs Cross in Wigan town centre, which staged the group's first fun day, will host their grand draw - top prize a week in Tenerife - during a cabaret evening for Christie's on Wednesday September 20 when the £2.50 tickets include refreshments. The following Saturday (23) the Britannia Inn, Bryn, sign in as supporters with their own Fun Day.
