RELEASE Cancer group ride out £5,000 winners
Mid-Cheshire's cancer fighters have just taken a punt on the gee-gees - and come out winners by several furlongs. The group, whose members come from the Knutsford, Sandbach and Northwich areas raise money for Manchester's The Christie - the largest cancer centre in Europe. They have tried many innovative ideas, but needed some persuasion to back an inaugural Fun Ride near Arley Hall for horse and pony riders. "We expected about 100 riders and to perhaps raise £2,000" said their chairman Peter Lund, "but it was a brilliant day in every respect. We attracted nearly 200 riders at £12 a time and, after costs, will still clear £5,000 for Christie's." The idea of sponsoring the new ride, over seven well marshalled miles of farmer Richard Furness's land at Arley Moss, came from group member and horse owner Sandra Lee of Winsford who organised the event. "I thought we would do well but even I was amazed by the response," she admitted. "We attracted riders from as far away as Carnforth near Cumbria, from the High Peak and Shropshire as well as all over Cheshire, Merseyside and Greater Manchester." Star prize was a year's free entry to the new ride for the most sponsorship money. Several riders raised £100, one over £200 but winner, Geraldine Davis from Liverpool, brought in a full £440. After costs, Mid-Cheshire finished the day £4,100 up on their 'bet' - with more sponsor money and donations to come. But Sandra noses them past the £5,000 mark. She is an employee of Barclays Bank and easily qualifies for a maximum £750 award under their employee in the community support scheme. Said Peter: This means that in our three year existence we have contributed over £65,000 to Christie's centenary appeal and its aims of funding research, new facilities and more effective cancer treatments. And it's a sure thing that we will try to repeat the Fun Ride next year." Ends For further information: Christie's Appeals Office 0161 446 3988 |
