RELEASE Crafty way to help raise dough for scanner Rishton-based fundraising group The Christie Crafters are 'flowering' with success after their Summer Garden Fayre raised £2,945 for the NorthWest's Christie Hospital. The group, led by Chairman Leo Maguire, raised the money by holding a fun-filled Garden and Tea Party, which included the sale of raffle tickets. The money will go straight towards the East Lancashire bid to raise £1.5m for the revolutionary 'Double Doughnut' Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scanner - the only scanner of its type outside London. The scanner enables surgeons at The Christie - Europe's leading cancer care centre - to conduct interventional surgery while a patient is being scanned, and allows a whole new approach to surgical procedures. Fundraiser Kath Maguire said: "Despite the pouring rain, which caused slight commotion to begin with, we managed to have a great day." Additional money has been raised for the Christie Crafters by sponsors who attended the fayre. These include Terry Ashton, an employee of Blackburn Intack Inn, who raised £550 in a Darts Marathon and employees of Rolls Royce who raised £766 by climbing the Three Peaks. The group is also awaiting an estimated total of £1,000 from Patrick Keane (foreman of Rishton-based Westwood Garage Mercedez Benz) and his team who climbed the Three Peaks in just 24 hours. Kath added: "The Christie has touched the members of our group either through their own personal experience or through that of a relative or a friend. "Fundraising is our way of saying 'thank you' to Christie's for all the care and support it has given to us and to thousands of local cancer patients and their families each year."
