RELEASE Leading clubs putt in to Christie's event Golf clubs from all over Britain are putting in to a novel Stableford challenge event at Pryors Hayes near Tarvin, Cheshire, to raise money towards the centenary appeal of Christie Hospital. Thirty leading clubs are each donating a four ball roundn as a raffle prize, including the famous Belfry in Birmingham which is offering the chance to play on its new PGA course. The green fees for such venues are well above the £25 it will cost each of 120 players to enter the 'Christie Challenge' at Pryors Hayes on Sunday October 1. Their event, which has already attracted 60 players, is being organised by two enthusiasts who have been treated at Manchester's famous cancer centre. They are member Neville Laird of Christleton, Chester, and Gerry Brophy of Golf Society Associates, Davenham. Proceeds will swell the hospital's £25m appeal to fund research, new facilities and to develop more effective cancer treatments. "With 30 clubs giving four balls as raffle prizes all our 120 golfers could, in theory, win back the cost of supporting The Christie's Challenge in savings on green fees alone," explained Gerry. "Our golfers are bound to finish on the winning side because Pryors Hayes are subsidizing the promotion and providing coffee and bacon butties plus a buffet meal at the finish."
