| This section of the Christie's website is no longer being updated. It remains online as a historical record of the astonishing success of The Christie Hospital's Centenary Appeal which raised £25m in the four years from 1997 to 2001. Fundraising is just as necessary as ever of course, to provide Real Help for Real Hope for ourselves and for future generations. Click here to bring yourself up to date with what's happening. | |

RELEASE Their 'shopping marathon' for Christie's They've run their share of marathons but never before in a shopping centre. Yet that is what two 35-year-old Sale men Dave Stewart and his life-long friend and neighbour Martin Howarth will be doing in The Bandstand of Sale's Six Acre centre on Saturday, (August 19). Altrincham Fire Station are lending one of their own running machines, so that in a four hour relay, the duo can try to complete the marathon distance of 26 miles for 'Christie's' appeal - by running on the spot. Urging them on will be members of Christie's Altrincham and Sale fund raisers' team who will collect among shoppers and spectators for the centenary fund of Manchester's famous cancer centre. Currently the hospital's appeal to fund research, new facilities and develop more effective and 'kinder' cancer treatments stands at £21.5m. Dave, Martin, families, friends, work mates and supporters hope to jog that nearer its ultimate £25m target. "I have run several full and half marathons and will be doing the Manchester Marathon and Great North Runs later in the year," said Dave. "But this time we wanted to run for a deserving cause and, as we have several friends with cancer, Christie's was the obvious choice." The pair even work next door to one another in Hazel Grove. Dave is a silicone chip examiner for Philips, and Martin a crane driver instructor with Adidas. "This run will certainly be different," said Dave "but my real ambition is to do a Triathlon, a swimming cycling and running marathon, before I'm 40." Fine Dave. But not even you could achieve that in a shopping centre. Ends (Note to News Desks:- Dave &
Martin intend running 11am to 3 pm.) |
