PRESS RELEASE
31st July 2000
Lee's Team Pedal for Pounds in aid of The Christie

Presenting the chequePedal power proved to be 'wheelie' worth the effort for a team of cyclists from Blackburn, who have raised lots of cash for The Christie.

The 20 cyclists, including staff and clients from Calderstones Hospital in Blackburn, took part in a sponsored cycle ride in the countryside. The round-trip from Calderstones to Waddington and back raised £570 in the name of Lee Crossley.

Lee, 30 and from Preston, is based at Calderstones Hospital in Blackburn. He has testicular cancer and has received treatment at the North-West's leading cancer care centre.

Lee said: "I would have liked to have taken part in the bike ride but I was receiving treatment at the time and wasn't well enough."

With the help of Dave Gillibrand at Calderstones, a team of enthusiastic cyclists was formed, eager to get on their bikes for the North-West charity.

Lee continued: "Staff and friends at Calderstones have been extremely supportive and I am really pleased at the amount that we've raised."

The money raised will go towards the Christie's East Lancashire appeal, which aims to raise £1.5m for a state-of-the-art Double Doughnut Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scanner. The scanner will allow a whole new approach to surgical procedures and greater accuracy in the delivery of treatment.  It will benefit many Lancashire patients, especially those with rare or more complex cancers.
