It remains online as a historical record of the astonishing success of The Christie Hospital's Centenary Appeal which raised £25m in the four years from 1997 to 2001. RELEASE Lee's Team Pedal for Pounds in aid of The Christie
The 20 cyclists, including staff and clients from Calderstones Hospital in Blackburn, took part in a sponsored cycle ride in the countryside. The round-trip from Calderstones to Waddington and back raised £570 in the name of Lee Crossley. Lee, 30 and from Preston, is based at Calderstones Hospital in Blackburn. He has testicular cancer and has received treatment at the North-West's leading cancer care centre. Lee said: "I would have liked to have taken part in the bike ride but I was receiving treatment at the time and wasn't well enough." With the help of Dave Gillibrand at Calderstones, a team of enthusiastic cyclists was formed, eager to get on their bikes for the North-West charity. Lee continued: "Staff and friends at Calderstones have been extremely supportive and I am really pleased at the amount that we've raised." The money raised will go towards the Christie's East Lancashire appeal, which aims to raise £1.5m for a state-of-the-art Double Doughnut Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scanner. The scanner will allow a whole new approach to surgical procedures and greater accuracy in the delivery of treatment. It will benefit many Lancashire patients, especially those with rare or more complex cancers.
