PRESS RELEASE
28th July 2000
Michelle aids development of Cancer Vaccines

Michelle EvansAfter the death of her mum, Joan, from ovarian cancer at just 48, Michelle Evans was determined to help fight the disease in a practical way.

"I wanted to buy something that would be of real benefit in combating cancer," said Michelle, from Rochdale.

And with the £4,500 proceeds from various fundraising events, Michelle, a pension review analyst, has bought a piece of equipment vital in the development of cancer vaccines. It is an incubator for growing cells used to test immune responses to such vaccines being developed at the Paterson Institute for Cancer Research - part of the The Christie, Manchester's renowned cancer centre.

Michelle and her dad David Evans, also from Rochdale, presented the incubator to Deborah Burt, a Paterson Institute Scientific Officer, who said that trials of vaccines for the treatment of cervical cancer were underway and others were soon to start for various other cancers including ovarian and colon. Deborah added that the incubator was essential to this work.

Michelle, 29, has organised cabarets, theme nights and several events in Rochdale's very supportive Mango's Bar in King Street. After her mum died in 1995 she raised several thousand pounds for the Cancer Research Campaign then set up the Joan Evans Memorial Fund specifically to raise cash for Christie's. And she¹s continuing to do so.

Michelle's next target is a £3,000 thermos freeze unit also to be used for cancer vaccine research. One of the fundraising events in the pipeline is her most innovative yet - a 'Hunks in Trunks' 2001 calendar featuring Rochdale Water Polo Team! Sounds like a real winner.

Currently she's looking for sponsors for the calendar, so if you can help please contact her via Jacky Plant at The Christie Appeals Office, tel 0161 446 3988.
