RELEASE £3,555 coins in The Christie fountain
So staff at Barton Grange Garden Centre, Woodford, near Stockport/ Macclesfield/Wilmslow, sales assistant Carolyn Fairhurst (left) and assistant centre manager Cueni Bandres readily joined Richard Tonge, of Christie's Appeal Macclesfield group and the hospital's regional appeals officer Ceri Johnson (right) in trawling for yet more cash. Said Cueni: "We are simply amazed by how much people have dropped into the fountain in just seven months - particularly as it all began by accident really. For Christmas we had a penguin pool and, without ever being asked, people began throwing coins in - for luck. Christie's is our charity for 2000, although we have worked with Richard and his team on several occasions. Realising people might want to keep helping Christie's in this way, we put up a sign on the display fountain in the main foyer. Immediately money began pouring in. It continues to do so and we wish to thank our customers." Added Richard: "It's fantastic. It shows how much people want to help the hospital's centenary appeal to fund research, new facilities and develop more effective cancer treatments. We hope to do some more fishing for Christie's at Barton Grange later in the year." Ends For further
