PRESS RELEASE

Blind Wigan girl's 1000 mile cycle challenge

Being a registered blind person has never stopped 21-year-old Kate Harrison living life to the full. She's made a parachute jump, gone sailing and, next Monday (July 24), will set off to cycle from Lands End to John O'Groats for the £25m 'Christie's' appeal.

Kate of Winstanley, Wigan will be on a tandem behind fiancé Stephen Oaks (21) and they hope to average 50 miles a day on the 1,000 mile, three week trip. Their self-imposed challenge for the £25m centenary appeal of Manchester's famous cancer centre has to be undertaken now because in September, aided by a first in mathematics from Warwick University, Kate will start work with a Manchester tax consultancy.

Steve, who also lives in Winstanley, has just graduated in chemistry from Nottingham University and they are being backed by family, friends and fellow students.

Not suprisingly, Kate won a 'child of achievement' award from a restaurant chain years ago and she opted to ride for Christie's after a close family friend died from the disease.

Kate and Steve's efforts signify mounting local support for Christie's aims of funding research, new facilities and the development of more effective and 'kinder' cancer treatments. The hospital's recently formed Wigan and Leigh supporters group have already raised over £5,000. Their next fund raising are fun days at the Mabbs Cross Hotel on July 30 and The Spinners Arms, Hindley Green on August 20 and, when their ride is over, they will invite Kate and Steve to become honorary members.
