PRESS RELEASE
15th December 2000
Firemen race to £2,300 for Christie's

Steve Parkinson is again in the driving seat as the firemen hand over their cheques for Christie's cause. Back row (left to right) Bob Cartwright, Mark Hesketh, Darren Moss. Front: Bernard Cochlin Christie's Carl Sharpe, Barry Worthingon and Deputy County Fire Officer Barry Dixon.

Firemen at Hindley station display the results of their efforts to help 'Christie's' after a colleague Steve Parkinson of Bolton was diagnosed with the disease.

That was in March and Steve (36) of Four Lane Ends, Bolton, next went to Manchester's world famous cancer centre for almost six weeks of radiotherapy treatment.

Within a further two months Steve, who has two young daughters, together with former Leigh fire station pals Mark Hesketh, Darren Moss and Steve Milnes was able to complete the annual Manchester to Blackpool spopnsored bike ride for Christie's. As he now works as a sub-officer in Training section at GM Fire Service's Swinton headquarters, Steve cycles 20 miles to and from work each day, so the 60 mile ride was not too hard, despite the fact that a pedal seized and had to be replaced at a repair station en-route.

Mark, Darren and Steve Milnes had no such problems. Between them and backed by families, friends and colleagues at several other stations, including Bolton, Wigan and Atherton, the four firemen raised £1,400 aided by Swinton training administrator Lynn Wells of Bolton who co-ordinated their fund raising.

Meanwhile his old 'Blue Watch' mates at Hindley station decided they too would like to support Steve. Led by Barry Worthington they organised a Race Night which raised a further £942.

When Carl Sharpe, chairman of Christie's Wigan and Leigh supporters group and the hospital's regional appeals officer Christine Blease went to Hindley station to receive their cheques Deputy County Fire Officer Barry Dixon was also present to add the brigade's congratulations. "We want to thank everyone," said Steve "'and we will all be raising more money for Christie's next year."
