PRESS RELEASE
19th December 2000
Reds' stars lift Michael's Christmas

Three very wise men and MichaelA proud Preston North End supporter he might be but Michael Luvate of Leyland was delighted when three Manchester United stars visited him in Christie Hospital.

Teddy Sheringham (left), Nicky Butt (right) and Raimond van der Gouw were paying a Christmas call on the young people's unit at Manchester's famous cancer centre when they met 22-year-old Michael who is being treated for bone cancer and will be home for the holidays.

The stars chatted with Michael and all of Christie's young patients, giving each one a special MU gift bag, posing for photographs and signing autographs and Christmas cards.

"All the youngsters, their parents and the staff got a terrific boost from the visit," said Christie's Deputy Appeals Director Toni Leden. "In a very quiet way Manchester United do a great deal more than is generally realised to help local communities. This low-key visit by some of their top players is typical of their steadfast support for Christie's and very much appreciated by all of us."

Two days later the young patients had another treat - David Beckham and his Posh Spice wife Victoria dropped in to see them, bringing more gifts and signing autographs.
