PRESS RELEASE
19th December 2000
Local Pair Take a Step in the Right Direction For Christie's

Worthy medal winners
Pictured with their medals are: Kate Wood (front, left) and Tim Wood (front, right). Also pictured are: (back, left to right) Bob Verrico; Felicity Swift; and Virginia Verrico.

Southport husband and wife team Tim and Kate Wood set themselves four major challenges at the beginning of the year, to raise cash for the famous The Christie.

Their sporty efforts have raised over £1,000 to buy critical care equipment for the hospital's Adult Leukaemia Unit.

The dynamic duo undertook a 200-mile challenge walk, camping across the wilds of Scotland and a four-day trek of 106 miles in Holland, as well as taking their places in The Great North Run half-marathon in October and the gruelling New York marathon last month.

Tim explained: "We wanted to do something positive for Christie's because our dear friend Mike Jarrett received treatment for many years at the Adult Leukaemia Unit. Sadly, we lost Mike to the illness earlier this year, shortly after we'd finished the first challenge and this made us even more determined to complete the other three. I ran the New York marathon on my birthday which was great fun, even if it was hard work!"

Tim is a Director of Southport Insurance Brokers. Both he and Kate are long-standing members of the Verrico School of Dancing, who have supported Christie's among other charities over the years.

The Christie, Europe's leading cancer care centre, plays a vital role in treating people from Merseyside, particularly those with more unusual and complex cancers.
