RELEASE Greg Wheels in £3,500 for Christie's
Police Frogman P.C. Greg Plummer has once more thrown himself in at the deep end - this time in a gruelling 900 mile bike ride which has so far raised £3,500 for the North West's leading cancer care centre, The Christie. Greg, who works at Lancashire Police Head Quarters in Hutton, gothimself into gear and completed the Lands End to John O'Groats bike ridein just over eight days. As it was the first long distance bike ride he had ever attempted, Greg, who lives in Haslingden, made sure he had ample preparation - cycling almost every day during the summer as well as going to the gym, swimmingand playing water polo each week. Greg said: "Prior to starting the bike ride, I had set myself the target of raising £1,500. Having now raised more than £3,400 - with money still coming in on a near daily basis and a charity raffle planned in the New Year - I hope to raise in the region of £5,000." The money will be handed over to the Chorley-based Christie fundraising group FACT (Fighting Against Cancer Together), who collect thousands of pounds each year for the Christie's appeal, in recognition of the hospital's work treating thousands of Lancashire patients, particularly those with rare and complex cancers. The Christie's appeal - now standing at £23m - aims to raise £25m by the year 2001. The money will go towards supporting research and development into cancer diagnosis, and expand a series of interlinked projects to bring about "kinder", shorter and more successful cancer treatments and care.
