| This section of the Christie's website is no longer being updated. It remains online as a historical record of the astonishing success of The Christie Hospital's Centenary Appeal which raised £25m in the four years from 1997 to 2001. Fundraising is just as necessary as ever of course, to provide Real Help for Real Hope for ourselves and for future generations. Click here to bring yourself up to date with what's happening. | |

RELEASE Barbara's bumper bundle for Christie's
To the delight of patients and staff alike, this glut of five tv sets - a giant screen model for the day room and four bedside portables - plus a video, a microwave and four cooling fans, have all been handed over by Wigan gran Barbara Barnes of Marsh Green and her family. Very many people support Manchester's world famous cancer centre, especially its £25m centenary appeal for which some £23m has so far been raised - making it the most successful charity appeal ever in the North. Barbara too is impressed by its success. But she, her family and friends particularly wanted to do something more personal for the two wards where her daughter Gillian (38) a mother of three from New Town was a patient until she died from colon cancer just over a year ago. "Gillian would go into Christie's for chemotherapy treatment and we would stay in the family unit," explained Barbara. "She liked being on Wards 1 and 2. She got to know everybody, everybody knew her and she was so well looked after that we wanted to help." So, led by Barbara's partner John Whyte, treasurer at New Town Working Men's Club, they laid on a show. Local artists 'Old Favourites', Don Murphy and Tony Rio all gave their services and, with a massive audience response, raised £725. Armed with a shopping list of what Wards 1 and 2 needed to help patients generally, Barbara trotted off to ASDA in New Town. Once their managers knew why she wanted so much they offered a discount - effectively contributing the fourth portable TV. Barbara (front) is shown making her fully laden 'santa run' aided by family members John Smith and 18 month old Chloe, (left) John Whyte, and Barbara's other daughter Catherine. Staff nurse Marcelle Lewis and Christie's regional appeals officer Christine Blease (far right) were more than happy to do the unwrapping. END
