RELEASE Stars, students, store and cafe help rock-et cancer total
Then, before international TV cameras, they signed a special tee shirt in support of the hospital's £25m appeal which will be auctioned at a major event in the New Year. Simon Le Bon, Nick Rhodes and Warren Cuccurulla were in Manchester to star at the gala launch party - dedicated to Christie's cause - of the city's Hard Rock Cafe in the new Printworks development. Before an invited audience of 250 including film, tv, radio, and sports stars, the fabled band showed that they have lost none of their magic. Simon urged everyone to "dig deep for Christies" during a raffle of showbiz memorabilia which raised over £1,000, plus at-the-door donations.
Christie's is the largest cancer centre in Europe and aims to mark its centenary next year (2001) by raising £25m to fund research, new patient facilities and by developing more effective cancer treatments. Although only publicly launched in May 1997 the appeal has now achieved £23m making it the most successful ever in the North. The hospital reached this landmark total following a 'Christie's Day' street collection by students from universities all over Britain which raised £19,800 - a record for a single day 'rag raid' anywhere in the UK, including London. This amount will be further swelled by the collections of Christie's regular supporter teams, ensuring a combined total of over £30,000. Meanwhile Selfridges Trafford Centre store have lifted their own total contribution beyond £10,000. They ran a 'Snow Sunday' traditional spectacular during which shoppers contributed a further £861 to a cash collection and supported various in-store events. These were allied to a show biz and sports auction run by Radio Key 103 which brought in a further £4,630. Top amount of £1,000 was paid on air for one of David Beckham's own Man Utd shirts. The footballer's 'Posh' wife Victoria and the other Spice Girls had signed a CD and special photo which made £650, while a Selfridge's slap-up dinner for four added a further £700.
