RELEASE 'Christie' students set new UK cash record Students from all over Britain helped set a new UK 'rag raid' record of £19,843 when they took part in street collections across the North West for Europe's largest cancer centre. Manchester's world famous The Christie aims to mark its centenary in 2001 by raising £25m to fund inter-linked projects for ground-breaking research, new patient facilities and the development of more effective and 'kinder' cancer treatments. More than 1000 students from across Britain travelled to reinforce local university students and Christie's regular supporter teams. They included Birmingham Aston University 'raiders' Craig Ferrante (left) and Shyan Kotak who more than played their part. Operating as 'Stavros Muchos' Craig became the hospital's champion collector and was awarded The Christie's Shield and a crate of donated beer. He raised an impressive £747.35p - but, remarkably, that was only 84p more than second placed Adam George-Wood of Bath University. Most of the students wore Umbro 'Dream Team' tee shirts and were sustained by snacks provided by Greggs Bakeries plus drinks from various regional soft drink firms during a long, hard day. Afterwards Brewers Scottish Courage , JW Lees and Joseph Holts ensured that most of them enjoyed a special UMIST social. The combined efforts of all the students brought in more in a single day for a charity than has ever been achieved anywhere before (including London). It also eclipsed their previous best 'Christie's Day' amount of £15,000. Once all the local collections have been received delighted hospital officials are certain they will smash their previous combined record of £30,000 and that the appeal's overall total will have reached £23m.
