PRESS RELEASE
30th November 2000
Prestwich women show real clout for Christie's

Bob takes it on the chinArdent Christie fund raiser Bob Splaine of Bolton takes it on the chin from two resourceful Prestwich women who have just 'clocked' £10,000 for the 'Christie's' appeal.

This staggering performance by Chris Day (left) and Judith Vaughan for the £25m centenary appeal of Manchester's famous cancer centre met with the full approval of Moston's Michael Gomez (rear) Britain's current super-featherweight champion. The women were equipped with autographed gloves donated by another boxer- supporter the up and coming Tommy McDonna.

Chris (54) works in a Jewish butchers in the Prestwich and, after she came under Christie's care for breast cancer, her friend Judith (51) who owns Manchester Fireplaces, suggested they put on a "concert or two" at Heaton Park Social Club towards the £25m centenary appeal of Manchester's famous cancer centre.

Chris and Judith are committee members, and with the help of the full committee - in particular Noreen Kershaw the actress and former director of Coronation Street and Heart Beat - they began staging shows. 'Scully' the comedian and local artists, were quick to volunteer their services. The concerts began 20 months ago, but it was the enthusiastic support of club members that really made things happen.

One member, Lesley Thomas made a parachute jump, another, Chris Barry did a sponsored swim and the club football team staged their own bike ride to Blackpool. Not content with that Chris and Judith wrote letters to local firms requesting donations. Creamline Dairies of Salford came up gold-topped - donating £1,000 in both 1999 and this year. The dynamic duo also went out selling Christie teddies - 280 in Middleton's Buckingham Bingo and an amazing 480 at Harpurhey's Gala Club.

It all left Christie's Bob sorely-impressed and with 'stars in his eyes' which was appropriate. Because Chris and Judith's final show was a real knock-out - a look-a-like entertainment provided by Ambassador Promotions with special guests BBC GMR's Fred Fielder and James H Reeve.
