RELEASE Trolley good way to raise cash
When Booths Supermarket Manager Michael Dennison and Warehouse Manager Billy McNeillie are not busy working at their store in Penwortham, Preston, the pair 'race' off to raise money for the North West's leading cancer care centre, The Christie. Michael and Billy, both from Penwortham, have raised a total of £750 by completing the London Marathon and also having a 'swing' at a Booths Golf Day. The 'good sports' also raised another £100 through an auction for a Lancashire signed cricket bat. Michael said: "We trained for the London Marathon and completed the run in four hours. We wanted to help because our store has chosen to raise money for The Christie - we all agree it is a worthwhile charity. " Booths stores have been fundraising for The Christie for two years now, and have reached a total of £20,000. Christine Blease, Christie's Regional Appeals Officer, said: "We are delighted with the money raised. It is the hard work and effort of North West organisations like Booths - as well as individual fundraisers - which helps The Christie maintain its position at the forefront of cancer research and treatment." The money will be handed over to the Chorley-based Christie fundraising group FACT (Fighting Against Cancer Together), who collect thousands of pounds each year for The Christie's appeal, in recognition of the hospital's work treating thousands of Lancashire patients, particularly those with rare and complex cancers. The Christie's appeal - now standing at £22m - aims to raise £25m by the year 2001. The money will go towards supporting research and development into cancer diagnosis, and expand a series of interlinked projects to bring about "kinder", shorter and more successful cancer treatments and care.
