RELEASE Armed and ready for 'Christie's Day' The battle against cancer will take to Preston's streets in earnest next Saturday (November 25) as people pitch in for the 'Christie's' appeal. Throughout the North West supporter groups for Manchester's world famous hospital will be carrying out the annual 'Christie's Day' street collection. Their efforts will be reinforced by a 150 strong army of student collectors from universities from all over the country. In each of the last two years student rag teams have contributed roughly half the £30,000 collected towards funding research, new patient facilities and the development of more effective cancer treatments. Christie's centenary appeal currently stands at £22.5m and the combined target of Saturday's campaign is to lift it further towards its ultimate £25m objective. "Our collectors put a tremendous amount into our special day and we feel sure people will give them strong support once again," said Christie's Appeals projects manager Paul Bailey who can be contacted on 0161 446 3988 or at appeal@christies.org Once again, Manchester, UMIST and Salford universities are putting teams in the field. Other student squads are coming from Aston, Aberystwyth, Bath, Exeter, Hull, Sheffield and London's Royal Holloway universities. Most will be wearing Umbro's special 'dream team' tee shirts for their officially authorised collections in the city and district and places like Chester. Further units will aid Christie volunteer groups working Bolton, Preston, Stockport, Macclesfield. Wilmslow, Warrington and the Gemini retail park. Christie's 'regulars' and other volunteers will cover areas like Tameside, Bury, Buxton, Chapel-en-le-Frith, Glossop, Marple, Romiley, Prestwich, Wigan, Leigh, Accrington, Blackburn and Darwen. Snacks given by Greggs Bakeries plus soft drinks from regional firms will sustain collectors during a long hard day. Brewers Scottish Courage, JW Lees and Joseph Holts will then ensure that students enjoy a UMIST social before they all bivouac for a second night at the Manchester Chaplaincy Centre.
