| This section of the Christie's website is no longer being updated. It remains online as a historical record of the astonishing success of The Christie Hospital's Centenary Appeal which raised £25m in the four years from 1997 to 2001. Fundraising is just as necessary as ever of course, to provide Real Help for Real Hope for ourselves and for future generations. Click here to bring yourself up to date with what's happening. | |

RELEASE Hauling his 8 ton cab around for Christie's Day
The Mosley HGV driver will do so at the rear of Smithfield Market off Ashton Old Road, Openshaw, at 1 pm - midway through the annual region-wide collection for the £25m 'Christie's' appeal of Manchester's famous cancer centre. By then scores of Christie's local supporters will be active from Preston to Buxton in Derbyshire. In many areas they will be reinforced by an army of 150 student collectors from Manchester, UMIST and Salford Universities plus travelling squads from Aston, Aberystwyth, Bath, Exeter, Hull, Sheffield and London's Royal Holloway universities. "Our collectors put a tremendous amount into our special day and we feel sure people will give them strong support once again," said Christie's Appeals project manager Paul Bailey who can be contacted on 0161 446 3988 or at appeal@christies.org But 34-year-old John will be entirely alone, pitting his trim 18st 10 lb and 5ft 11 frame against the massive high liner cab unit of the delivery trailers he drives for Kerry Foods of Hyde. All he will have to take the strain is the special harness given him outdoor clothing specialists Troll of Uppermill years ago. For, although this will be his first public performance, John has been secretly hauling his cab around for some time. "I was encouraged to do so to help improve my fitness by my gym Betta Bodies of Denton," he explained. "I've watched the 'World's Strongest Man' on TV. Those guys are bigger and heavier than me but they don't haul cab units as far as I will be doing." John wants to help draw Christie's closer to its ultimate £25m target in memory of his father, stacker truck driver Jack Flitcroft (53) of Clayton who died from stomach cancer seven years ago. Sponsored by family, friends and workmates at Kerry Foods - many of whom will be turning up to watch his feat - John hopes to raise £1,000 plus any extra donations at the event. In each of the last two years Christie's Day has totted up some £30,000 - half coming from the student rag teams. So it is not suprising that Greggs Bakeries are readily providing snacks and other regional firms soft drinks to sustain collectors during a long hard day. Brewers Scottish courage , JW Lees and Joseph Holts will then ensure that students enjoy their special UMIST social. Ends Issued by Anne Statham PR tel: 01625 526479/521279 |
