RELEASE Sandra tackles Snowdonia for the Christie Appeal
Sporty Sandra (pictured right) decided to run the marathon in aid of The Christie's centenary appeal, which currently stands at £22m. A member of the Blackburn Road Runners, Sandra has been running for the past six years and already has the London and New York marathons under her belt. "The Snowdonia marathon appealed to me because of the challenge," said Sandra. "I've taken part in a number of road-races in the past and have always raised money for worthy charities. "I decided to raise money for The Christie as it is such a brilliant cause and affects so many people in Lancashire. I'm hoping to raise £1,000 for the appeal as a result of the marathon." In preparation for the challenge, Sandra trained five times a week pounding the roads of Blackburn to build up her stamina. "There was quite a steep incline around the 22-mile mark, so I was trying to prepare myself for that," said Sandra. The money that Sandra has raised will go towards Christie's 'Double Doughnut' East Lancashire appeal, which aims to raise £1.5m to buy a revolutionary Magnetic Resonance Imaging Scanner for the world famous hospital - the only scanner of its type outside London. It will allow a whole new approach to surgical procedures and greater accuracy in the delivery of treatment, thereby reducing the risks and time taken to perform procedures like biopsies and treatment of tumours. Christie's Regional Appeals Officer, Jacky Plant, said: "We are very pleased that Sandra has raised this money for The Christie's appeal. Many Lancashire patients, especially those with rare or more complex cancers, will be among the people to benefit from the new equipment."
