RELEASE Gardeners' event sprouts an £800 cancer success
Some 85 people went to St Peter's Assembly Rooms, Hale, to put their posers to Granada Tonight's Jeff Turner and the head gardeners of Tatton and Wythenshawe Parks, Sam Youd and John Steadman. It could have been as dry as dust, but the entertaining knowledge and wit of the team was appreciated by their audience who had already paid £5 a ticket towards the £25m centenary appeal of Manchester's famous cancer centre. Their generous response, both to a raffle and an auction of flower arrangements, plants and gardening materials donated by local firms, boosted the total proceeds to almost £10 a head. Big buff Jeff also had some advice for growing wine of year-round appeal commending a vine that smells like chocolate and produces delicious grapes. Then (front centre) he posed with Sam (left) and John plus organisers Barbara Mannion (left) and Lisa Wakeford who were clearly delighted with the fruits of their first ever event for Christie's.
