PRESS RELEASE
1st November 2000
Buddhists eclipse their cancer target

Great success for our Buddhist supportersHaving challenged themselves to raise at least £25,000 for the 'Christie's' appeal in only four months, delighted Buddhists from all over Greater Manchester area proudly display the result of their massive effort - £33,000.

Their cheque was presented by the Venerable Chueh-Teng (back row, fourth left) to Christie's Deputy Appeals Director Toni Leden, (standing alongside), before the Shrine of the Buddha's Light International Association temple in Old Trafford.

This BLIA branch which serves the North of Britain and Ireland, draws members mainly from North West Chinese and student communities. They responded to a request to help Christie's £25m centenary appeal and several members are currently being treated at Manchester's world famous cancer centre - the largest in Europe.

Fund raising began at the temple in June with a spectacular arts display combined with a cancer awareness exhibition. Their continued efforts revolved around a giant raffle, offering such prizes as a holiday in Beijing, a £1,300 computer and a £500 hi-fi system, and which realised £18,500.

The programme ended with a special dinner for 300 people last month which raised £15,000 on the night - £5,000 coming from the sponsorship of Chinese singers to sing traditional songs.

The BLIA is a world wide movement and the Manchester branch began five years ago. The association aims to benefit people regardless of race, religion or social backgrounds. A registered charity, it is also involved in cultural and educational activities and holds classes in language, cooking, martial arts etc.
