PRESS RELEASE
26th October 2000
Epic ride for Ike raises £3,000 for cancer fund

Over £3,000 was added to the massive 'Christie's' appeal this week in memory of a Cockermouth manager who had intended to cycle from Lands End to John O'Groats to raise the money.

But Mr Ike Hodgson (50), of Fitz Road, Cockermouth, died in July shortly before he was due to make the epic two week ride with two teachers, Mike Wilde, head of Cockermouth School where he was a governor, and Paul Tickner of Workington's Stainburn School. Nevertheless, with Ike's sponsors willingly donating their money, Mike made the 900 mile ride in memory of his friend, as well as for his own school's funds.

Ike had decided to raise money for Christie's Manchester's famous cancer centre after his daughter Catherine had a cancerous kidney removed last February. She is now in remission.

This week Mike supported Mrs Teresa Hodgson as she presented the money to Christine Blease, Christie's regional appeals officer. It includes £1,000 donated by Ike's family and friends, plus £960 raised by colleagues at Sellafield where he was an engineering manager at the Thorp Reprocessing Plant. Their contribution was promptly doubled by BNF under their employee community involvement programme.

Teresa thanked everyone who had donated in her husband's memory. Christine explained that, to date, £22m has been raised for Christie's £25m centenary appeal which aims to fund ground-breaking research, create new patient facilities and to develop more effective and 'kinder' cancer treatments. To cover the 'last lap' of the appeal, she is currently setting up a fund raising supporters group in Cumbria. Anyone wishing to help, or to have further details, can contact her on 0161 446 3988.
