It remains online as a historical record of the astonishing success of The Christie Hospital's Centenary Appeal which raised £25m in the four years from 1997 to 2001. RELEASE Golfers chip in £2,000 for Christie's There was no lack of drive from players or staff when Altrincham based UK & Ireland Insurance Services held a special golf day at Manchester's Northenden club for 'Christie's'. Nearly 100 clients of the brokers, from as far away as London, and Birmingham, their other offices in Abergavenny, Cardiff, and Dublin, plus representatives of insurance companies took part and contributed handsomely towards the £25m centenary appeal of Manchester's famous cancer centre. The celebratory dinner was attended by such notables as Coronation Street's 'Des Barnes' (Philip Middlemiss), the city's former Deputy Chief Constable cum celebrity John Stalker and football's Frank Stapleton and Sandy Busby. The final result was an above-par £2,000 cheque. Suitably sized it is shown being signed by managing director James Wrynne (right) and held by finance director Martin Hoult (centre) and director Kevin McNeil. Christie's is the largest cancer centre in Europe and aims to mark its centenary next year by funding ground-breaking research, building new patient facilities and developing more effective and 'kinder' cancer treatments. To date over £22m has been realised. Ends For further information
