PRESS RELEASE
25th October 2000
Pedal Power proves to be a 'wheel' success

A wheely big cheque
Watched by fellow members of the Bike Aid Team, Terry Unsworth hands over a cheque for £5,138 to Maureen Reid from the Fylde fundraising team

A group of fundraisers got themselves into gear and raised £10,276 in a gruelling five day bike event for the North West's The Christie and the Manchester Royal Eye Hospital.

The 25 cyclists, who are all from the Fylde area, completed Bike Aid - which covers 452 miles, travelling through Launceston, Bristol, Ironbridge and Manchester, to Blackpool - despite the wet and windy weather conditions.

For two keen cyclists, the challenge was not enough - Peter Dilks and Garry Parkinson 'got on their bikes' for an extra two days and cycled another 600 miles to complete the Lands End to John O'Groats bike ride. The cyclists, ranging from the age of 17 to 60 years, managed to 'handle' the event by cycling 200 miles every week in preparation.

Terry Unsworth, Sales Manager for Darwen-based Brookhouse Composits and member of the organisation committee for 'Bike Aid - Riding For The Community', said: "The bike ride was a great success, even though the weather was against us. I acted as a ride marshal to organise the riders into single file and double file so there were only one or two minor collisions along the way!

"I am very grateful to all individual members who have taken part and all the companies who provided their support."

The money raised is being shared equally between The Christie's centenary appeal and the Manchester Royal Eye Hospital. Terry explained: "We all get a lot of joy out of cycling which leads us to take part in these rides but the fact that we are fundraising for the two hospitals gives us the motivation to complete the ride. Nearly all members of the Bike Aid team have been touched in some way by Christie's."

The money will be handed over to the Fylde Coast Fundraisers, who collect thousands of pounds each year for The Christie's appeal in recognition of the hospital's work treating thousands of Lancashire patients, particularly those with rare and complex cancers.

The Christie's appeal - now standing at £22m - aims to raise £25m by the year 2001. The money will go towards supporting research and development into cancer diagnosis, and expand a series of interlinked projects to bring about "kinder", shorter and more successful cancer treatments and care.
