'Lucky Pete' - and customers - kick back at cancer

Pete Taylor - well and truly open for business again

Cancer knocked Northwich chip shop owner 'Lucky Pete' Taylor sideways - but he's soon kicked back.

His need of four cancer operations - including removal of a lung - plus months of extensive treatment, forced him to close his popular 'Pete's Chippy' in Winnington centre for two years.

Yet thanks to skilled staff at three hospitals - particularly Christie's, Manchester's famous cancer centre - Pete (36) is once again open  and back in regular training at both Winsford Boxing and Northwich Tai Kick Boxing clubs to stay super fit.

He's also renamed the business, which he's run since he was 20, as Lucky Pete's. For customers flooded back when he reopened and staggered him by their support when he ran this year's Chester Half Marathon for the £25m 'Christie's' appeal.

"It was great that after being shut for two years, my customers have came back, and in even greater numbers. But what they have done to help me support Christie's is amazing," said Pete. "All I did was put a big jar at the back of the counter saying I was going to run for Christie's with a photo of me bald due to chemotherapy treatment. I thought I might get £100 which I'd add to. I never actually asked anyone to sponsor me and I've never told the guys at the boxing and tai boxing clubs about it. I just put up the jar and customers started putting in change - more than that, even tenners and £20 notes".

In four months Pete took in a remarkable £1,500, which he presented to Christie's this week. "I just wanted to give a little something back to Christie's for all they have done for me. I also wanted to prove that having cancer is not the end, only a new beginning."

He added: "I'd never run a half marathon before. It was hard but I did a good time, one hour 34 minutes. I was trying to get under one hour 30 minutes because a customer said that if I did he'd double his contribution. Only I hurt my knee ten miles out and had to slow down - but he doubled it anyway."
