PRESS RELEASE
19th October 2000
On their bikes - for Christie's

Salvesen team

We're wet, but it's well worth it! Workers at the Christian Salvesen distribution depot in Leigh display their 'Christie's' certificates in recognition of their efforts to help the £25m centenary appeal of Manchester's famous cancer centre.

The awards were presented this week by Christie's regional appeals officer Christine Blease after13 of them, plus two back-up car drivers, raised £1,165 by biking to Southport - and back.

Supported by work mates, families and friends, the ride was organised by Jonathon Hillidge and Lee Guy who explained: "We wanted to do something to help fight male cancer and came up with the idea of doing the ride to help Christie's. The round trip to Southport should have been about 54 miles but the route we took made it 65 miles and it took us about five hours."

There was one alarm. On the return run, the bike of office worker Simon Marsh of St Helens seized totally at Haydock Island. "But he was determined to finish with the rest of the lads so he ran the remaining seven miles back to the depot," said Lee.

Lee, who also lives in St Helens, is shown (centre back) holding their cheque with 'driver' Christine Blease. Displaying their certificates (left to right) are:- Back row: Gary Hart (Leigh), Gordon Lamb (Lowton), Dave Bostock (Bolton). Front: Paul Minnis (Wigan) Jonathon Hillidge, (Leigh), Stephen Bostock (Bolton), Peter Oatley (Atherton) and Neil Pye (Ashton-in-Makerfield).

The others who completed the ride were Paul Baines (Leigh), Andy Lonsdale (Bolton), Geoff Oatley (Atherton), Stuart Dean (St Helens) and George Hayter (Kirkby).
