It remains online as a historical record of the astonishing success of The Christie Hospital's Centenary Appeal which raised £25m in the four years from 1997 to 2001. RELEASE Cancer fighters may double their target Four years ago 'Stockport Campaigners' set out to raise £65,000 towards the £25m 'Christie's' appeal but, after an impressive show down at their Hoe Down, they could even double that amount. For at the event chairman Bob Mathews (centre) presented a £110,000 milestone cheque to a delighted Toni Leden (bottom left) deputy Director of Appeals for the famous Manchester hospital. Christie's aims to mark its centenary next year by funding ground breaking research, creating new patient facilities and developing more effective and 'kinder' cancer treatments. The Campaigners were in at the start. As Bob pledged the new group to try for £65,000 -"my knees were knocking under the table." Yet, in a little over two years, they had passed £80,000. "It's all due to the support of the people, firms, shops, pubs, clubs and organisations in Stockport and district as well as our hard working team," said Bob. During the Hoe Down run by Cheadle's 'Five In A Bar' country group, Martin Hilton, son of team secretary Derek, handed over £500 he raised doing the Three Peaks Challenge. Campaigners Jill Tushingham, Ross Forbes and Diane Quarmby had taken part in the 60 mile Manchester-Blackpool bike ride adding £800. Colleagues of another team member, Lynne Ingham, at Manchester's Inland Revenue offices had notched £1,600 by supporting the Christie's Jeans Day and holding a dressing down day while numerous other presentations and collections were recorded. Next, some supporters are taking on the Great North Run and on December 9 the Grosvenor Choir will perform The Messiah at Stockport St Mary's Parish Church (tickets £4). It's all edging the Campaigners closer to an amazing 'double'. There's just one remaining problem. Every year they have their Hoe Down but, as (left to right) Christine Munro, Sandra and Derek Hilton, Regina Barlow, Lynne Ingham, Diane Carroll and (front) Toni Leden and Jill Tushingham know, Bob's 'geetar' playing gets no better.
