PRESS RELEASE
10th October 2000
Shining a single(s) light on skin cancer

Dr Allen and Kathy Rosser
Doctor Allan demonstrates the lamp to Kathy Rosser

No one makes light of skin cancer - except scientists at The Christie and members of this North West wide Singles Club.

Scientists at Manchester's famous cancer centre have invented this toaster sized 'magic lantern' which treats a host of potentially dangerous skin cancers. Well over 1,000 patients have already been treated at Christie's and at Hope Hospital, Salford.

But it was members of 'Kathy's Singles Club' who funded the making of the first lamp by raising over £5,000. The club meets weekly in Urmston, but draws its 100 plus members from Wigan to Crewe and all over Greater Manchester. They are determined to buy another lamp, and have presented Christie consultant Dr Ernest Allan, who specialises in skin cancer and thyroid cancer, with a further £4,146 cheque towards their new target.

No hospital stay is necessary for the 'magic' treatment which takes between 15 and 40 minutes. Patients read or relax while the lamp puts out a pure and intense beam of light to activate a photosensitive cream on the patients skin killing the cancer cells without leaving scars. The lamp is now much in demand at UK hospitals.

Making their presentation at O'Brian's Club, Stretford singles club founder Kathy Rosser explained it was their contribution to Christie's £25m centenary appeal and its aims of funding more ground breaking research, new facilities and developing more effective cancer treatments - such as the lamp.

During its 16 year history the club has enjoyed over 160 weddings and raised money for many charities. But Christie's has always been the No.1 cause for Kathy, a retired Urmston stores and night club manager.
