RELEASE Burnley-born actor brings Dickens back after 150 years
What the Dickens! North West theatre-goers are in for a special treat with a 'double return' for Burnley, when Charles Dickens appears at the Burnley Mechanics. Not the real Charles Dickens of course - but Burnley-born actor Richard Moore, well known to TV viewers for parts in the ITV series Band of Gold and McCallum. The accomplished actor will tread the boards and appear for one night only on Sunday 15th October 2000, in "An Evening with Charles Dickens". Richard's performance will take place almost exactly 150 years after the world famous author gave his own legendary performance on the Burnley stage, 50 years before the world famous The Christie was built! What's more, Richard will be performing free of charge, with all money raised going towards the Christie's East Lancashire 'Double Doughnut' appeal. Richard Moore will recreate the author's dramatic readings from his own works. He will re-enact the terrible tragedy of Sikes and Nancy from Oliver Twist, along with the comic horror of one man's first experience of education in Nicholas Nickleby at Dotheboys Hall. Richard - whose real name is Jack - attended Burnley Grammar School and went on to work as a photographer with the Burnley Express. He is looking forward to performing in his home town, and hopes that fellow members of the drama clubs he attended as a young actor - the Highcliffe Players, the Garrick Club and the Masque Players - will be supporting the evening in aid of The Christie Hospital. The Christie's Appeals Project Manager, Paul Bailey, said: "Richard is delighted to be performing on home ground and raise cash for our Centenary Appeal. The evening is destined to be a huge success. The proceeds will go into the East Lancashire appeal, which aims to raise £1.5m to buy a revolutionary 'double doughnut' Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) Scanner for the hospital - the only scanner of its type outside London." The Christie treats thousands of Lancashire patients each year, especially those with rare or difficult to treat cancers. Richard's 70-minute performance has gained critical acclaim as far as Hong Kong and Bangkok since it premiered at Theatr Clwyd in Wales last November and has been described as 'a theatrical gem' and 'quite brilliant'. It is guaranteed to be an event not to be missed. Anyone wishing to purchase tickets for the event should contact Burnley Mechanics on 01282 664411.
