PRESS RELEASE
3rd October 2000
Why Rick dropped himself in it - from 160ft

Trainee pub manager Rick Brownhill helped coax, cajole and bully anyone and every one into doing a 160 ft bungee jump for 'Christie's' at the Hare & Hounds Timperley. Everyone that is, except himself.

The mass jump was his own idea. His father David a Baguley printer died from cancer a year ago and Rick, his family and workmates were eager to support the centenary appeal of Manchester's famous The Christie cancer centre.

Is this really such a good idea?
Going...going...

Beyond the point of no return
...Gone! Graham Brownhill throws himself into raising money for the Appeal

Despite appalling weather nearly 50 people, from Sale, Altrincham, Baguley and Wythenshawe areas took part - watched by hundreds of pub customers. There was a barbeque and members of Christie's Sale & Altrincham fund raising team helped with collections. Among the first to jump was Rick's brother Graham (20) a student at Loughborough University so raising £200 -"but it was really scary," he said.

That made Rick (21) even more determined to stay below ...until customers and his friend Gary Collins (39) who lives nearby, took a hand. If Rick couldn't face the DROP Gary, a father of two, had the reverse problem. He suffers vertigo and was "petrified" of being hoisted UP in the jump platform suspended by a giant crane.

"Then Gary said to me: 'Look, if people can beat cancer we can beat our own fears," said Rick. "I said if customers would sponsor me for the £100 minimum required I would do it. So a friend went round collecting and came back with £236 - leaving me with no option!"

Afterwards, Gary who runs FMS, who re-manufacture office furniture in Warrington, commented: "The actual jump was excellent - I really enjoyed that." But Rick was adamant: I never, ever, want to have to do that again!"

However both men are smiling. Gary, because sponsored by suppliers, customers and friends, he gained a hefty £350 chunk of the £2,000 raised by the event. And Rick is pleased to add the bungee proceeds to money raised at a recent fun day - so totalling some £3,000 for Christie's.
