PRESS RELEASE
29th September 2000
New Cancer Information Centre - the best in the north west

Mandy and Mike
Cancer Information Centre Co-ordinator Mandy Robinson shows Key 103 presenter Mike Toolan CancerBACUP'S website.

The best cancer information source in the North West has just opened its doors at Christie Hospital.

The new 24-hour Information Centre for patients, families and visitors offers the region's most comprehensive guide to any cancer-related topic. That includes the 200 forms of the disease itself, from diagnosis through to treatment and rehabilitation. There are ideas for self help and how to tell people you have cancer, details of local support organisations plus information for carers. Financial, employment and welfare rights issues are also covered.

It is funded by the £25m Christie's appeal - with the most significant financial contribution coming from Manchester radio stations Magic 1152 and Key 103 - and has been created in partnership with the national charity CancerBACUP. Centre Co-ordinator and former Christie Ward Sister Mandy Robinson, who now works for CancerBACUP, will help guide people to the most appropriate source. This could be the hospital's own literature, booklets from organisations such as the Cancer Research Campaign and in particular from CancerBACUP, whose extensive range of information keeps up to date with all new developments in cancer research, treatment and care.

Mandy, other staff and volunteers will also help people access quality cancer information on the internet, such as the hospital's own site at christie.man.ac.uk and CancerBACUP's at www.cancerbacup.org.

"We shall complement the excellent information already provided by hospital staff," said Mandy, a cancer nurse for 16 years.

Seconding nurses to the Centre on a rota basis means the hospital will always have a pool of staff available who are trained in information skills. Outside normal 9am to 5pm weekday working hours, the Centre's foyer - on the main internal corridor - will remain open to give access to a wealth of literature.

The Information Centre is part of the 'Living with Cancer' project of the hospital's centenary appeal, which now stands at £22m. Project leader Siobhan Harpur is delighted that all three aspects of the project will come into being before the centenary appeal ends.

"First, thanks to funding from Marks and Spencer, we appointed a counsellor for patients and their families," she said. "Now the Information Centre is complete and work has just started on the final phase - a Rehabilitation Centre."
