Community teams as far north as Cumbria and spanning west of the Pennines from Blackpool to Burnley have worked tremendously hard raising funds for a Manchester hospital to which people living up to 100 miles away owe their lives. Christie's expertise in cancer is certainly what inspired the 'twin towers ride of Peter and Davina Dickson from Goosnargh, and their team of wacky 'Doughnutters'. They cycled 600 miles from the Eiffel tower to Blackpool Tower (right) and - with cash from other events - achieved an amazing £144,600. That was topped up by £50,000 from Yates Brothers Wine Lodge plc of which Peter is Chairman. Smith's Charity donated £100,000; other trusts and companies have given up to £25,000. Some of these donations have come in as a result of networking by business members of Christie's East Lancs Committee, for which we're very grateful both to the committee and the donors. Among the latest contributions from the red rose county is £12,000 from Colne based Ruth Sutton and friends. All the money from Lancashire is being channeled into the centenary appeal's project to buy a 'double doughnut' scanner. This is almost star wars technology. The magnetic resonance imaging scanner gives 3D images inside a patient. It also has a doughnut shaped area in which clinical investigations and surgery can be carried out while a patient is scanned. Appeals Director Angela Roden said, "All of our supporters in Lancashire and Lakeland have contributed to the purchase of a piece of equipment which is truly revolutionary both for treatment and diagnosis. They can feel very, very proud."
