CHRISTIE With £18million already pledged to The Christie's appeal at the start of the year further major donations took the total by the year end to just over £20million. GUS Home Shopping announced a £500,000 pledge and encouraged staff throughout the business to become involved in fundraising. Joseph Holt more than exceeded their original £200,000 pledge by raising £301,000 in just a year, which has been used to improve the Out Patients Department and build the stylish new Holt Entrance. One of the biggest grants resulting from Granada Live Challenge saw £75,000 added to the appeal. Our stalwart corporate supporters continued to work hard towards achieving their pledge targets with NatWest finally reaching their £100,000. Bruntwood Estates, London Scottish Bank, Wise Speke and Parisa group continued to make significant contributions, and a new fundraising first for Manchester saw Reuters stage a highly successful 'Stockmarket Challenge' event. In the course of the year, all parts of the Airtours group including Cresta Holidays and Travelworld played their part in swelling the total amount contributed by the company and its founders David and Anne Crossland to nearly £700,000, making them our biggest corporate supporter. The redevelopment of the surgical facilities was made possible by G & J Seddon generously carrying out £450,000 of construction work as their contribution to the appeal, marking their centenary. An official opening ceremony was performed by our Patron, the Duchess of Kent. Work was also completed on the multi-sensory therapy room in the Young Oncology Unit with help from Sir Jimmy Savile and McDonald Children's Charities. Financed by Marks & Spencer, a counsellor began work with the Living with Cancer centre. Using Lottery money, a major grant from the New Opportunities fund saw building work begin on extra bunkers for new linear accelerators which will also result in completion of plans for a Radiotherapy Development Suite to which GUS Home Shopping will be a major contributor. During the year, our local fundraising teams took their combined total to beyond the original £600,000 pledged at the start of the appeal. The dedication and commitment of all these loyal supporters is priceless. They played a major role in the success of a two-day collection at Manchester Airport in the summer and the second Christie's Day in December. They also joined with many company staff to raise funds through a variety of strenuous events including the Manchester to Blackpool bike ride, which alone raised more than £80,000, a Krypton Factor Assault course, abseiling down Manchester Town Hall, and the London Marathon and Wilmslow Half-Marathon. Hundreds of supporters played their part in raising £12,000 at an all-day Line Dancing event and more than £10,000 at a Keep Fit marathon. The social calendar was dotted with many prestigious fashion shows, lunches, dinners and balls. Thanks to Bridgemere Garden World and Manchester Airport, over £6,000 was raised at the inaugural RHS Flower Show at Tatton Park. The highlight of the autumn season was a performance of 'Eclipse' and a gala dinner at Blackpool Pleasure Beach in the presence of HRH the Duke of York. Tribute must also be paid to Racheline Garston who saw her personal fundraising contribution top the £100,000 mark. The London committee hosted a reception at the Bank of England, courtesy of the Governor, attended by many representatives of charitable trusts and companies, including Greg Dyke, newly appointed Director-General of the BBC, who took the opportunity to present a personal contribution of £20,000. A new committee in East Lancashire set itself the task of raising £1.5million to fund the 'Double-Doughnut' scanner. This was given a major boost by the efforts of the 'Doughnutters' Peter and Davina Dickson and friends, who cycled from Paris to Blackpool raising almost £150,000. A further £100,000 towards the machine was pledged from Henry Smith's charity. Manchester's premier local radio station Piccadilly Key 103 brought its fundraising efforts to a stunning climax with the 'Music for Life' concert at the MEN Arena starring Spice Girls Geri Halliwell and Mel C, Lulu and numerous other performers who all gave their time free. Together with the proceeds from their massively successful 'Bring a Pound to Work' day the total sum presented was more than £126,000. But the award for the most spectacular event of the year must go to the 'Treasures of the North' exhibition organised by Christie's, the Fine Art auctioneers and sponsored by Henry Cooke and Brown Shipley. The £200million exhibition of furniture, paintings, jewellery and ceramics gathered from private collections across the north of England, included works loaned by appeal Vice Patron the Duke of Westminster. Over two months the priceless display was visited by more than 32,000 people in London and at Manchester's Whitworth Art Gallery and a reception held in London was attended by HRH the Prince of Wales. The final contribution to the appeal is likely to be in excess of a quarter of a million pounds. The year also saw a 13% increase in legacies, with 186 bequests being made in total. May we again take the opportunity to express heartfelt and since thanks to everyone who has give us support. With the 2001 centenary year drawing ever closer we will now be redoubling our efforts to reach the £25million target. Everyone remains determined to help the team that's getting there first get there faster
