Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany and City legends Colin Bell and Mike Summerbee have visited The Christie to help celebrate a major improvement in patient services and facilities at the specialist cancer centre.
The whole of the main entrance area off Oak Road in Withington has been extended and remodelled since 2016, including the construction of a new first floor Integrated Procedures Unit (IPU) which opened to patients during the summer.
The IPU is a state-of-the-art unit which brings five day-patient services together under one roof providing patients with a seamless experience, shorter waiting times and speedier treatment. It is home to plastic surgery, endoscopy, radiology, pain management and the day case procedures team and includes a new state-of-the-art Interventional Radiology suite, carrying out life-changing and potentially life-saving pinhole surgery for patients.
The area below the Integrated Procedures Unit includes comfortable seating for 292 patients (an increase from the previous 150 seats), a WH Smith shop, an M&S coffee shop, a charity centre, wig room, cancer information centre and a Patient Advice and Liaison Service.
Vincent Kompany, Colin Bell and Mike Summerbee toured the new facilities at the Oak Road main entrance before watching an interventional radiology demonstration carried out by Christie consultant Jon Bell, son of City legend Colin Bell.
Interventional radiology patient, Louise Hassall, who has been a patient at The Christie since 2010, was invited to the demonstration. Commenting on the new facilities she said: “The new facilities for patients are fantastic. In addition to having access to some of the best clinical technology, patients coming to The Christie now have access to a wonderfully bright, relaxing and spacious waiting area with a new WHSmith shop, an M&S coffee shop and a cancer information centre and charity centre.
Christie Chief Executive Roger Spencer, who escorted Vincent Kompany, Colin Bell and Mike Summerbee round the new facilities said: “We were delighted to welcome such high profile figures from Manchester City to help us celebrate a new era in patient treatment, services and facilities at The Christie. We’ve invested significantly in the new IPU and new patient facilities and are delighted that the feedback from patients has already been so positive.”
